Fancy sleeping with a chicken? Well according to scientists it could be a good idea, and following new research that the smell of a live chicken repels the mosquito an experiment was done by placing a live chicken in a cage just outside the mosquito net next to the bed in certain homes.  In every home that had a chicken very few mosquitoes were found in the traps, as to the homes without a chicken the mosquitoes caught were much higher.

The experiment also showed that mosquitoes actually do avoid certain types of animals as they enjoy feeding on cattle, sheep and goats as well.  All this new information is welcomed due to the 3.2 billion people in the world at risk malaria, and this new information shows that mosquitoes can be controlled using odour cues, so we are now one step closer in developing new ways to protect ourselves.
